Have you ever heard an actor say, or maybe you have said it yourself “I’m putting together material for my showreel”. Now to anyone who hears this who isn’t in the acting industry, it sounds like your sourcing material from some really great projects you’ve been involved in. To anyone who does actually work in the industry, it signifies that you are being lazy.
Why lazy? Well the answer is simple. Actors no longer have to wait around to be cast in BBC or ITV productions to get good material to use in their showreels. They carry pedigree of course, but when you’re just starting out, you’re not going to be able to wait around.
The digital revolution and indeed the DSLR revolution now means that good looking footage is now easier than ever. Thousands of films are made every year in the UK from big budget to films that only have a budget of £100, all of them have a wealth of good and bad stories, so it is then up to you to choose the best script and the best characters for you.
Time and time again we say that now is the time for you to get a showreel to tell agents and casting directors that this is what you can do. The world is your stage, and how you choose to perform on it is entirely up to you: there is no wrong answer.
So stop pondering about whether or not you need a showreel, have a look at all your material, decide on the 3 – 5 best scenes where you have acted your socks off, and get it put together into an affordable reel. Or if you don’t think you’ve quite got enough material that shouts “look at me, this is what I can do” then there are companies (like us) who can write, film and edit scenes just for you.
