When you are responsible for getting your name out there, it can feel daunting. Here are a few of the mistakes to avoid when you want to promote yourself.
Don’t miss out on chances to get contacts
Sometimes it seems like everyone knows everyone within the acting world. It’s because they have realised the value in keeping in contact with a lot of people. Networking can be a great way for you meet people who can help you out. This can be as simple as meeting for a coffee, adding contacts to social media or just remembering to get a phone number. Making sure you have contact details for other people is important – making sure they have yours is even more vital. Building up a network of contacts will provide you with people that can help you in future.
Don’t let those contacts drift away
You’ve managed to connect with all sorts of people but now maintaining those connections is vital. Make sure you take the time to get in touch. Make sure you take the time to talk to those people. Whether this is sending an email or letting them know about something you’re working on that would interest them. If you keep in touch, those contacts will be happy to help you if you’ve ignored them for a year until they become useful to you, they might not be so willing
Don’t hide away online
Your online profiles are important. If someone wants to find you, the internet is where they will start. Firstly, make sure your profiles all have your professional name on them – alternative names will be harder to find and won’t look as professional. Secondly, make sure you’re active where it matters. Delete old accounts if they are not in use and make sure you are signed up to Twitter, LinkedIn, IdeasTap and Stage Jobs Pro.
Don’t let your profiles gather dust
If you have accounts – use them. This is a great platform to present yourself and if you haven’t tweeted in a month it is a wasted opportunity. Let people know what you are doing. They don’t need to know what you had for dinner or how drunk you got on Friday. Let people know about projects you’re involved in, places you’ve been and interesting content. Also make sure any online CVs are up to date. You will stay fresh in the mind of your contacts and anyone looking for you online will have a good impression.
Don’t go in without a plan
Finally, and most importantly, organise your time. If you try and do everything you will probably miss something. Take time to sit down and work out your goals. Make them sensible and achievable. If your long term plans seem too big to work on, now is the time to break them down and find a place to start –Maybe you won’t get that dream job right now, but how can you be building up the relevant skills? Make sure you are spending your time well by focusing on going through your to-do list. If you get through the smaller steps you can often find the big ones aren’t as daunting as you thought.
